Four to six weeks for a focused internal tool, eight to fourteen for a platform with roles, reporting and an integration or two. The clock starts at an agreed scope, not at the first conversation.
Where the time actually goes
Roughly a fifth on getting the scope right, half on building, and the rest on the parts nobody demos: permissions, validation, the reports that have to reconcile, and the failure paths.
That last third is what separates software that survives a year from software that is quietly abandoned by March.
What makes a project run late
Almost never the code. It is waiting for a decision — which of two workflows is the real one, who signs off a discount, what the tax treatment is on a partial refund. We front-load those questions into the scope for exactly this reason.
The second cause is an integration with a system nobody has documented, which is why we ask for gateway and ERP credentials in week one rather than week six.
